Laparoscopic splenectomy

If you have not had surgery in that area of the abdomen, and your spleen is not too enlarged, then your surgeon may recommend to perform the splenectomy laparoscopically. A laparoscopy, or a keyhole surgery, is done through a number of smaller incisions, as opposed to an open surgery. Open splenectomy

If your surgeon believes that your splenectomy is high risk, then an open surgery may be recommended. Sometimes even the open surgery can be demanding, and this is why it is important to have an excellent team of surgeons and theater nurses to perform your splenectomy.
