Splenectomy

Splenectomy, or the surgical removal of the spleen, is a demanding surgery that requires an experienced and highly trained team. At The Surgeons Collective we bring our many years of experience to provide expert surgery. Our team works together to support you as you prepare for your surgery, during your stay at the hospital and as you recover.

The surgical anatomy of the spleen

Your spleen is located in the left upper part of your abdomen. Because it is located at quite a posterior location (towards the back), it can be difficult to access in surgery.  The spleen has attachments to the colon and to the stomach, and its artery and vein are intertwined with the tail part of the pancreas. Your surgeon at The Surgeons Collective in Perth will help you understand the complexity of a spleen surgery or splenectomy. We value the importance of clear communication and want to make sure that you feel supported and cared for, during your treatment by our team.

If you need a splenectomy, it is important to see a team of specialist surgeons.
A surgery of the spleen, if done improperly, can result in injuries of adjacent organs and in very severe bleeding if the vision of the artery and vein is not clear. Your surgeon will also assess the size of your spleen, because depending on the condition affecting it, it can become very enlarged.

Laparoscopic splenectomy

If you have not had surgery in that area of the abdomen, and your spleen is not too enlarged, then your surgeon may recommend to perform the splenectomy laparoscopically. A laparoscopy, or a keyhole surgery, is done through a number of smaller incisions, as opposed to an open surgery. Our team of surgeons and specialist doctors is always there for you to explore the safest, most comfortable and most effective surgery and treatment type.

Open splenectomy

If your surgeon believes that your splenectomy is high risk, then an open surgery may be recommended. Sometimes even the open surgery can be demanding, and this is why it is important to have an excellent team of surgeons and theater nurses to perform your splenectomy. At The Surgeons Collective, we build on our extensive experience performing demanding liver surgeries at The Liver Centre WA, and we have access to modern retractors and other medical technology, as well as highly qualified theater teams.

Depending on the size of your spleen different types of incisions may be necessary.

What to expect with splenectomy surgery

At The Surgeons Collective our team will also help you plan for any tests that need to be performed prior to your surgery. In addition, we will set up pre-operative vaccinations as part of your splenectomy preparation. That’s because the spleen has a specific role in the immune system. Your surgeon will organise for you to meet with a specialist in infectious diseases, to discuss the exact vaccinations program that is customised to your personal needs. Typical vaccination programs include vaccinations for pneumococcus, haemophilus influenza type b and influenza. Throughout your treatment journey, our team will always adapt your treatment to your individual needs and medical history.

We also involve our dietitians to personalise your diet recommendations, so we optimise your recovery process.
