Obesity: A complex health condition
Obesity is now recognised as a medical condition and this is a paradigm shift, moving away from the stigma that linked it to overeating and lack of exercise. At The Surgeons Collective in Perth, you can count on our team of specialist doctors, surgeons and dietitians to help you understand your health condition and plan the most suitable treatment. If you suffer from obesity, you probably understand the difficulty in losing and maintaining weight loss. At The Surgeons Collective Perth we can help you with a personalised care and surgery plan.
Our specialist obesity surgeons will look at the complex factors that lead to excess weight in your situation. This is where we work together as a team to give you a clear diagnosis, an in-depth understanding of your condition and a proposed treatment or surgical plan. We commit to offering you the best possible care and comfort and will be by your side throughout your weight loss journey.
About Us
At The Surgeons Collective we work as a team of expert surgeons, as well as hepatologists, gastro-enterologists and accredited dietitians.
Why would you consider obesity surgery?
At The Surgeons Collective we never give up on your health. What that means is that we look at the causes and consequences of an obesity problem.
Obesity is associated with other conditions such as cardiac disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, osteoarthritis, sleep apnoea, gallstones and gout. We know that obesity may reduce your life-span and your quality of life, affect your self-esteem and put you at risk of depression. This is why, when we discuss obesity or bariatric surgery and a surgical treatment plan, we also look at your wellbeing, offering you support and comfort and making sure that you are well informed and well prepared for your weight loss surgery procedure.
What to expect before bariatric surgery?
Typical steps to prepare for obesity surgery may include:
- Consultation with your bariatric surgeons and team.
- Making lifestyle changes in regards to healthier food choices and portion sizes.
- Seeing your dietitian at The Surgeons Collective.
- Go on the Optifast diet 2 - 4 weeks before your surgery (also known as VLCD or very low caloric diet, < 800 kcal per day). The diet helps to shrink the liver to 25-30% for a safer surgery. The liver is the largest solid internal organ in the upper abdomen and lies directly in front of the stomach. The liver can be quite enlarged with excess weight and the Optifast diet helps shrink liver to allow your surgeon to perform safer surgery on the stomach.
- Seeing other medical specialists for review e.g. endocrinologist, anaesthetist, cardiologist, depending on any underlying medical condition of concern.
At The Surgeons Collective, we work together as a team. Our bariatric surgeons work closely together with our dietitians to provide you with the most comprehensive information about your treatment plan. All of us here at The Surgeons Collective in Perth focus on offering you the highest level of care, kindness and support as you prepare for surgery. After your surgical procedure, we’re here for you to help you achieve the best possible outcomes, with support, follow-up and guidance to maintain your weight loss after the surgery.
What to expect after bariatric surgery?
After bariatric surgery, you would normally be able to get up and walk around only a few hours after your surgery. Pain and discomfort are usually mild and managed with simple pain relief medication. Depending on your situation, your surgeon may prescribe nausea or anti-acid medication, as well as blood thinners to prevent blood clots in legs and lungs. The hospital stay for bariatric surgery usually lasts between 1 and 3 days.
Our treatment plans are entirely personalised because we believe you deserve care that is adapted to your situation and needs. When we provide diet instructions after obesity surgery, the diet advice is tailored to your situation and the main focus is on reducing the total energy intake. Our dietitians will help you adopt a new, healthy lifestyle, with nutritious food and regular physical activity. Implementing this behaviour change requires support and that is what our team is here for.
At The Surgeons Collective, we are able to help our patients through a team approach: your obesity surgeon, dietitian, exercise physiologist, psychologist and specialist doctor work together to help you achieve lasting weight loss. We are available for you to monitor your diet changes and we never give up on your health!
